My partner and his mother sitting on a garden seat. Don't they look sweet? Trish put this order in with me a little while after Barbara put her Festive Titan order in. Similar to that piece, this one provided a new challenge. The order was quite simple;
A hanging ball entirely of lilies
Similar size to the Sunshine Ball (10-15cm)
Orange, yellow, pink and bright
I'm a little obsessive about sunrise colours so choosing the papers was a pleasure, but using origami paper did create a structure problem. Traditional origami paper is very thin and delicate, which made me worry that the end product would be weak and possibly fall out of shape. The solution was conveniently what I had already planned; to pop an extra, smaller lily in all the base lilies and a few stronger papers. And strangely enough, hours of folding proper origami paper left me with zero hand ache afterwards, unlike my calendar paper flowers!
It looks very yellow in this picture! The inside hides a very large cream coloured cardboard lily left over from Barbara's Festive Titan of Paper Flowers around which other big lilies were propped. There is no paper ball in the middle, only the paper flowers.
The happy customer! The paper lilies fit perfectly into the home, which is mostly cream and white but has colourful accents of orange and yellow.
You can see how the lilies are doubled up. Doing so adds strength but is also aesthetically pleasing and complicates the shape. My favourite part was choosing which paper flowers to put where.
This picture shows the oranges and pinks as more dominant. The cream lily with a little pink on the petals comes from a magazine page that just happened to fit the colour scheme perfectly.
The 'First Blush of Sunshine' Ball was the sort of item I'd like to make more of and to improve upon as I go. Lilies in this shape create a forest of colours and patterns,
are light and simple and adaptable. Maybe a dramatic version in black and white or black, white and grey.
Or a sunset themed piece to match this one, with violet and orange paper flowers! There are also wonderful possibilities for other paper flower styles, like cherry blossoms or paper roses! My imagination runs wild while real time continues on, ignoring my pleas for more time.
